EN 16612:2019 glass load calculator
This EN 16612 glass calculator checks the strength and deflection of a glass pane under the loads you enter. EN 16612:2019 is the European standard for the design of glass panes under lateral load, published in the UK as BS EN 16612. GlassLoad.com can check one rectangular pane against the characteristic wind, snow and self weight loads you enter, in millimeters, kPa and N/mm². Choose EN 16612:2019 as the standard in the calculator. GlassLoad.com is not affiliated with CEN or BSI.
What GlassLoad.com checks under EN 16612:2019
- Loads: you enter wind (gust 3 s or storm 10 min), snow (3 weeks) and the self weight of sloped glass as characteristic values in kPa. GlassLoad.com does not work out wind or snow loads; take them from EN 1991. It applies the partial factors of Table 2 and the combination factors ψ0 of EN 1990, and checks every combination (Eq 1 for strength, Eq 2 for deflection).
- Glass: annealed float, toughened and heat strengthened glass, as produced or sandblasted. The design strength fg;d follows Eq 4 for annealed glass and Eq 6 for toughened and heat strengthened glass, with the kmod of the load duration.
- Support: four edges with the nonlinear formulas of Annex B. Two edges and one edge use beam theory, and three edges uses the plate analysis of GlassLoad.com, because the standard gives no coefficients for them.
- Laminated glass of two plies with the simplified method of Annex D, and insulating glass in a double unit with the load sharing of Annex C, the cavity width and the altitude and temperature differences you enter.
- Result: the maximum stress σmax against fg;d, the load at which they are equal, and the deflection w against wallow, the span over 65 or 50 mm, whichever is less. You can change the limit.
- Second method: the plate solver of GlassLoad.com, shown in the method panel against the Annex B value.
What is not covered yet
- National annexes: the recommended values of the standard are used for γM;A, γM;v, kmod and ke, and no national annex is applied.
- Cavity temperature from sunlight, triple insulating units, edge seal forces, point fixings, fins and non rectangular glass.
- A minimum thickness finder. Use Check a thickness and try other thicknesses.

Worked examples
EN 16612 prints no complete example of a check, so these two were worked by hand from the formulas of the standard and then run in GlassLoad.com. Every example has its own page with all the steps. All worked examples
