AS 1288:2021 glass wind load calculator
This AS 1288 glass calculator checks glass against wind pressure and finds the glass thickness. AS 1288:2021 is the Australian standard for glass in buildings. GlassLoad.com can check one rectangular pane of glass against the wind pressures you enter, with the simplified method of its Section 4, in millimeters and kPa. Choose AS 1288:2021 as the standard in the calculator. GlassLoad.com is not affiliated with Standards Australia.
What GlassLoad.com checks under AS 1288:2021
- Glass: annealed, heat strengthened and toughened glass of the thicknesses of Table 4.1, monolithic, laminated of two equal sheets with a PVB interlayer, or insulating glass in a double or triple unit. Each pane of an insulating unit carries its share of the pressure and is checked on its own.
- Support: four edges, two opposite edges, or three edges, which is checked as two edges spanning the free edge as the standard allows.
- Pressures: you enter the ultimate pressure Pu and the serviceability pressure Ps, already combined to AS/NZS 1170. GlassLoad.com does not work out wind pressure. The simplified method covers pressures up to 10.0 kPa.
- Strength: the allowable span Ballow from the Section 4 formula for the glass type and thickness, with the span B of your pane. The report gives the ratio B/Ballow and the capacity pressure Pu,cap.
- Deflection: the span over thickness B/t against the allowable value of Figure 4.35 at Ps, on the span over 60 basis. It has its own verdict and never changes the strength PASS or FAIL.
- Second method: the Section 3 first principles check with the plate solver of GlassLoad.com, shown in the method panel against the Section 4 value.
- Minimum thickness finder: the thinnest thickness of Table 4.1 that passes both strength and deflection.
What is not covered yet
- Human impact (Section 5), balustrades and barriers, fins, point fixings, sloped glazing and the wind pressure helper of the appendix. The report says that human impact is not checked.
- Laminated glass with unequal sheets or an interlayer other than PVB, which Section 4 does not cover.
